WAN THE HAND THAT HOLD HER

Wan The hand That Holds Her

Favia Portunisca is hands down the most interesting young artist working today. She's a messenger sent by the angels of stone-cutters past, racing forward, anticipating the ecstasy of guiltless leisure. Her parochialism is easily excused, having summoned a psychological hangman to twist our collective lightbulbs. Based in Paris, Favia was born in MacapĂ  on the northern channel of the Amazon River. Her practice is informed by the caricatured collapse of distributive ecological models in the southern hemisphere. Her broad, serene sculptures finger chimneys of fluted metaphor, while squatting between incomparable trench-like anthropomorphic shapes. Unproven and unmoved speculation wash across the patient viewer with wisps of half-meaning. There's a welcomed laziness buoyed by arpeggios of theoretical claptrap that keep her oeuvre immune from critical gaze. Portunisca is an artist to watch, if only in  anticipation of the inevitable hiss of insignificance.
